For weather or emergency closures. Check the court's notice to confirm it extends deadlines.

How the deadline is counted

  1. Count 30 days after service. The service day is not counted.
  2. Add time for the service method. Mail adds 5, 10 or 20 calendar days depending on location. Electronic service and overnight delivery add 2 court days.
  3. Move past closed days. If the result is a weekend or court holiday, the deadline moves to the next court day.

Court orders control. CCP 471.5 allows the court to set a different time, and many orders granting leave to amend do. A defendant who has not yet appeared is generally served with the amended complaint like an original complaint and has 30 days under CCP 412.20.
