The date of entry, not the date of the trial or verdict.
Holidays and court closures
California judicial holidays under CCP 135 are always skipped, including Lincoln's Birthday, Cesar Chavez Day and Native American Day.
For weather or emergency closures. Check the court's notice to confirm it extends deadlines.
How the deadline is counted
- Start on the date of entry.
- Add 10 years. The judgment may be enforced through the same calendar date 10 years later.
- Renew before then. The calculator also shows a safe renewal date: the last court day on or before the 10-year date.
Worked examples
| Example | Judgment entered | Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Entered December 25, 2016 | Sun, Dec 25, 2016 | Fri, Dec 25, 2026 |
| Entered in spring | Tue, May 10, 2016 | Sun, May 10, 2026 |
What expires and what does not
When the period ends, the judgment cannot be enforced, and liens created by it are extinguished (CCP 683.020). Renewal under CCP 683.110 to 683.220 extends enforceability for another 10 years from the date the renewal application is filed. A judgment cannot be renewed within 5 years of a previous renewal.
