- Wholly discretionary: the court 'may' extend, for a period up to 12 months, and must be satisfied the extension is justified. NEVER compute this as an automatic 12-month rollover. Extensions are commonly granted where the GMC investigation is genuinely ongoing, but the court can and does grant shorter periods or refuse.
- There is no statutory cap on the number of successive extensions. The practitioner may separately apply to the court under s.41A(10) to terminate a suspension, vary conditions or substitute a shorter period, and that decision is final.
