- Opens 'Unless the High Court otherwise directs'. Rule 50.17(6)(a) gives the High Court a general power to 'shorten a time limit or extend it (even after it has expired), unless that is inconsistent with other legislation'. Amendment out of time is commonly permitted where the grounds are properly explained. A party seeking an extension must apply when serving the notice and give reasons (r.50.17(7)).
- 'Business day' means 'any day except Saturday, Sunday, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday or a bank holiday' (CrimPR 2025, r.2.2(1)). Amending the appeal notice is not the same as extending the statutory appeal period in r.50.19, which cannot be extended.
